Köstliches Sizilien: Im Schatten des Ätna
Episode for a documentary series, ´32/´26, ZDF/arte, 2022
About the Film
The “Delicious Sicily” series explores an island that is reinventing itself by creatively adapting to climate change. This episode goes on a journey of discovery along the eastern Val Demone, in the shadow of Mount Etna, around Torre Faro, Messina, Savoca and Augusta. The regional specialties are spaghetti alle vongole, sweet and sour pumpkin and banana blossom salad.
The episode “In the Shadow of Mount Etna” begins in Torre Faro, the northernmost municipality in Sicily. Only 3.6 kilometers separate the island from Calabria, the Italian mainland.
Filippa Mancinone conjures up spaghetti alle vongole here. At the foot of Mount Etna, Domenico Nicoloso serves a typical Sicilian fall meal: Sweet and sour pumpkin on white bread.
Near the coastal town of Augusta, Roberto Li Calzi cultivates his “Garden of Biodiversity”. Thanks to rising temperatures, bananas have also been growing here in large numbers for several years. Their flowers are used to prepare a hearty, fresh salad.
