Monica Vitti –
Die Königin des italienischen Films

52´, ZDF/arte, 2024

About the Film

Monica Vitti was one of Italy’s most influential and versatile actresses in the 1960s and 1970s. She became world-famous in the films of the famous director Michelangelo Antonioni. Vitti was not only his muse and lover, but also an equal artistic partner in films such as “L’avventura” (The adventure, 1960) and “Deserto Rosso” (The Red Desert, 1964). Later, she was one of the main female protagonists in some of the best films of Italian comedy.

Her characters are sensual, provocative, independent and unhappy in their narrow roles as housewife, lover, mother, nun or prostitute. They all long to love freely and live independently. Monica Vitti embodied all of this like no other, in her life and in her art. In the film, Monica Vitti herself has her say, in her roles and in interviews. Her biographer Laura Delli Colli, film critic Carlo Chatrian and French actress and director Laetitia Masson also speak about her influence.
