Ullstein Chronic
Film about the history of the German Book Publisher Ullstein, 2011
About the Film
Ullstein asked me, if I can produce a short film about their history, to mark the book they were about to publish in 2011.
The Ullstein book publishers can look back on a tradition of over a hundred years. Beginning in 1903, the Ullstein brothers led the books under the sign of the owl to success. No other publishing house reflected the zeitgeist of the new metropolis of Berlin to the same extent. The splendor of the first decades was followed by the expropriation and expulsion of the Ullstein family during the Nazi era. The new beginning after the war and the aegis of Axel-Springer-AG, before Ullstein finally moved under the umbrella of the Swedish Bonnier Group. Big names have left their mark on this house – Gerhart Hauptmann, Vicki Baum and Erich Maria Remarque are just as much a part of it as John le Carré, Jo Nesbø and Richard Dawkins. This is an exciting portrait of a publishing house that has managed to combine quality content with commercial success.
